On the surface, this is Andrew Olson's story of emigrating from Sweden in
1903, settling in Washington State and British Columbia, and mining precious
metals in Alaska. But it is much more than that. It is a story of enduring
hardships, all the while holding onto a dream and seeing it realized on a
far grander scale than ever imagine. It is a story of risking all that is
safe and comfortable and familiar for the chance to do better in a new
world. And it is a story of holding firmly to what matters - family bonds,
close friends, high ideals. All this, Andrew Olson did. Living in an age
when choices were simpler, Andrew is no less an inspiration for us today in
our more complex society.

Benjamin Franklin Award Winner
"Old age: the crown of life, our play's last act." So said Cicero, the
Roman orator and philosopher, whose opinion might have been penned with the
remarkable men and women of Young At Heart in mind. Crosman, inspired by her
own parents' graceful aging, interviewed hundreds of elderly people, each of
whom continued to lead vibrant lives. She spoke with the famous and
non-famous, those born in this country and those who had immigrated, some
who had endured a difficult life, others who had known a life of privilege.
To each she posed the same question: What was their secret of living long
and well? The answers she received were as individual as the interviewee--
sometimes contemplative, often funny, occasionally cantankerous, always
insightful. These elders shared one common attribute: an unsentimental
attitude toward longevity. Their no-nonsense outlook offers a bright,
realistic look at aging for the rest of us headed down that path.

$11.95
Step into Carol Kay Green's shoes for a while and journey into the mind of
the mentally ill. She knows the way. Green is not a medical professional
surmising what a patient must be thinking. She is not a scientist explaining
what is going on in the brain. Nor is she a family member discussing a
mentally ill relative. Green speaks from direct knowing. She is one who has
lived through mentql institutions, remembers what happened, and has the
courage to tell us what it is like from the inside. Hers is a personal
account of what was felt, thought, and experienced as she moved from
overwhelming confusion in her mental instability to tentative attempts in
initiative, and finally, to declared self-confidence in her reintroduction
to the outside world.

Eating My Way to Heaven
Denise Martin
5 1/2 x 8 1/2
1-887542-23-X
297 pages
$17.95
Denise Martin grew up in a nice, upper-middle-class family, with a loving
stay-at-home mom and a successful dad who served as a church elder. But
beneath this perfect picture lay a dirty secret, one of incest and abuse,
deceit and denial. To protect herself, Denise tucked her memories away, but
she couldn't shake the hurt, confusion and shame she felt. To compensate for
her lack of self-esteem, she indulged her unhealthy obsessions with food,
drugs, and danger, always living life on the edge. Yet she never sunk into
oblivion. Bright, compassionate, and tenacious, she also created responsible
roles for herself as an innovative businesswoman and an advocate for
children. This book is the sometimes outrageous, often comical, always
entertaining story of Denise's long hard journey from a damaged past to a
healthy, promising, productive future. This candid, no-holds-barred account
illustrates so well that when we have the courage to admit our denial and
confront our demons, what we will find can set of free.

254 pages
$19.95
In this book, Wayne Anthony along with input from many healthcare
stakeholders, offers a surprisingly uncomplicated, yet workable plan that
would simplify the system while offering coverage for people at all income
levels, in every industry, and in both urban and rural areas across the
nation. His plan, which calls for the creation of State Healthcare
Cooperatives, offers a number of attractive features, including: making it
possible for everyone to participate in a collective healthcare trust;
giving participants more choices on healthcare providers and services;
dramatically improving how healthcare is delivered; reimbursing and
rewarding preventive healthcare and healthy lifestyles; putting purchasers,
participants and providers of healthcare back in charge of healthcare and
its delivery system. The Healthcare Solution lays out just how to implement
such a plan, building on a foundation already in put in place by past
legislation and regulations. As Mr. Anthony illustrates, accessible,
affordable, quality healthcare for all is an achievable goal. To do that, we
must know how it can be accomplished. The blueprint lies within the pages of
this book.

Doctor. In most people, the very word evokes a spectrum of reverent
adjectives ... Intelligent, powerful, all-knowing, infallible, demi-god. Or

who ought to know. She has spent her entire adult life as a physician and
has crossed swords with many a doctor who should have chosen a different
line of work. Dr. Hollenbeck shares her insider's view into the art and
practice of medicine, and opens a window into its soul. This entertaining
look at real-world medical care comes from woman who's been a family
physician for the past three decades, knows her way around the medical
profession, and speaks up about its unflattering angles. With a wry sense of
humor and a no-holds-barred writing style, Dr. Hollenbeck pops the balloon
of sanctity that insulates those at the top of the medicine machine,
exposing its glitches and recommending a much-needed overhaul to make it

Education and experience -- those quantifiable "hard" skills on your resume
that "validate" your suitability for a certain job or career -- are
important to achieving professional success. But the benefits of education
and experience can be neutralized if not complemented by another, just as
essential skill set -- that of "soft" skills. Soft skills are those that,
when acquired and applied, influence attitude, behavior, and character in a
positive way. They work synergistically with hard skills to create a
powerful vehicle that moves you toward your goals. However, while hard
skills are easily measured, soft skills are more difficult to assess and
sometimes perceived as "open to interpretation" -- a common rationale used
by those who tend to apply these skills on a "sliding scale." In this book,
the authors remove any ambiguity surrounding the validity and application of
soft skills. For each soft skill they cite -- forty-one in all, ranging from
leadership and managing anger to developing trust -- they present a clear
picture of the responsibilities qnd rewards inherent to each skill. The
wryly humorous Mistakes to Avoid and the introspective Steps to Success
accompanying each skill add both spice and specific guidelines for making
these skills your own.

Several feet below the surface of the roaring river, Jaime reached for the
end of the rope wrapped around his waist. He knew if he remained tethered to
the Jeep's roll bar, he would soon drown. One pull on the rope and he would
be released to the current, surging toward the gaping black hole. He
hesitated a moment longer, his lungs about to explode. Then, realizing it
was impossible to hold out any longer, he began to tug on the rope with what
little strength he had left. As the end of the rope began to slip through
the knot, Jaime heard a voice. The words were as clear as if the water
hadn't been roaring in his ears, the tone so gentle and peaceful it
distracted him from his pain. He let go of the rope. He was still tethered
to the Jeep, floating under the water. He felt himself slipping into an
altered state of consciousness, as reality began to recede into the
distance.

As a first-grader in a one-room school in Kansas in 1927, Edgar Allen could
not muster the courage to ask his teacher for permission to miss school to
attend his first air show. Seemingly a lifetime later, in 1948, the same
reticence nearly kept him from speaking up and preventing his future wife
from slipping through his fingers. In the interim, he had fulfilled his
dream of learning to fly and had faced enemy fire, bad weather, equipment
problems, and the the privations of wartime Britain to return his crew and
himself safely from 30 bombing missions in World War II. In PILOT FROM THE
PRAIRIE, he modestly tells his story in a series of episodes as
uncomplicated as the Kansas farm boy this combat veteran never ceased to be.

The Alaska Pen: An Illustrated History of Unga, is an extraordinary story
about the last four decades in the life of a remote Alaskan village. Unga
and its rich history were kept alive by the Alaska Pen, Unga High School¹s
monthly newsmagazine and the only printed periodical in the entire Alaska
Peninsula district. The collapse of the cod fishing industry, closure of the
Apollo Mine and the Second World War all led to the decline of Unga and by
the end of the 1960s the last few families were forced to leave, and Unga
village ceased to exist. The Alaska Pen: An Illustrated History of Unga
compiled and edited by Thor Lauritzen, Peggy Arness and Edward Melseth all
spent their formative years in Unga. They tell a compelling story of a
village that enjoyed a great community spirit. It is a story about a hardy
people who eked out a living from the sea, whose lives were constantly
challenged by the harsh environment in which they lived, whose isolation
bred independence, whose joys were generously shared, and whose heartaches
were felt by all. This is a story about Unga, told through the eyes of the
children who once lived there, but a similar tale could be told about many
of its Aleutian neighbors, which suffered the same fate.

In Forcing the Hand of God, Jacquie Ream weaves a multi-layered story about
a time both revered and reviled in American history -- that of the great war,
World War II. At the center of the tale is Rodger Browne, a man caught in a
web of conflict -- a soldier who must decide when to kill and when to show
compassion, a husband and father who must choose between fighting the enemy
abroad or serving his country stateside. But woven within the woof and warp
of Rodger¹s narrative are the stories of so many others: the Chinese
mechanic LinChing, and his daughter, Mary Elizabeth, wiser than any
ten-year-old should be; Rodger¹s wife, the woman who abandoned her own
burgeoning career to start the family he so wanted; the priest and nuns who
run the ramshackle mission in Yunnan Province; Rodger¹s uncle, the dashing,
man-about-town who woos the woman who gave Rodger the nurturing his own
mother couldn¹t; and so many others who add to the tapestry of this tale.

This is the story of people who fight the good fight, without and within.
They are flawed, to be sure, but they continue to do their best as they
fulfill their need to help one another as they move through this turbulent
time. Rich in history, filled with unforgettable characters, posing those
questions that haunt a nation decades later, Forcing the Hand of God makes
for an engrossing and timeless read.

Rules are Rules is a gentle story about a little girl, Maya, who is supposed
to kiss her aunt but doesn't feel comfortable doing so. With help, she
resolves her dilemma to everyone's satisfaction, including her own. The book
opens with Maya angrily stomping away from her home. She relaxes as she
enters "her" forest, not ready to consider her problem more calmly. With a
neighbor's help, Maya figures out why her mom has imposed such a rule -- and
even the wisdom behind it. With such respect in mind, Maya "thinks outside
the box" and comes up with a perfect solution. This book guides children in
making wise choices. It subtly tells them to listen to their intuition, to
find comfort in nature, to share their problem with a trustworthy adult,
and to know they deserve respect.

This book is a testament to the impact one person has on the lives of many,
to the tremendous good one can bring about whatever the chosen path, to the
responsibility each of us carries to make a positive difference in this
world. Do they still make men like Chuck Randall? He was a solid strength of
character, holding to his principles, enforcing no drinking and no smoking
among his players. His rules were as much a challenge then as it is now and
contributed to his incredible wins on basketball courts. But what mattered
most was the respect he gave his players as individuals and as equal
partners on the team. They were all one, working toward the same goal, no
one more important than another, each fully supporting the other and giving
his all. It is now wonder that the respect he gave returned to him a
hundredfold.

Meet the native species of Alaska the animals and plants that have been
around for ages, as well as those that died out eons ago. How did these
creatures manage to survive the extremes of Alaska¹s environment? How were
the Alaskan dinosaurs different from their counterparts elsewhere in the
world? How have present-day animals and plants adapted to the harsh winters?
Open up to Ron Smith¹s world and learn that the answer is not just in what
these creatures are their size or color or type of skin covering but
also in what they do. Smith highlights the most interesting of Alaska¹s
residents the towering grizzly as well as the petite pika, the
³coat-changing² ptarmigan and the ever-popular salmon to reveal nature at
its amazing best. This insatiably curious scientist asks questions we¹d
never think of to discover the wonder of this wild land. How can a
ponderously slow-growing evergreen ever hope to survive when it¹s surrounded
by the rapidly growing deciduous trees? Building upon the discoveries of
Alaska¹s extinct dinosaurs and plants and the interrelationship of current
species, Smith looks to the future. What are the trends? Which of these
specially adapted flora and fauna are likely to survive or even flourish?
Past, present, or future, our country¹s final frontier continues to
fascinate. Join Smith on his journey within and around Alaska for a truly
unique tour of its incredible inhabitants.

After Senator Obama's inspiring and thought-provoking speech on race,
most Americans feel it is time to set the record straight regarding the
origin of racism in America. Over the years, we have had several discussions
on the subject, most of which focused on the relationship between blacks and
whites. But seldom have we ever acknowledged the number of whites who gave
their lives to wipe out this deadly social disease nor have we reviewed the
role that politics played in establishing a racist society. Historians
report that one party supported slavery and Jim Crow while the other party
opposed them. They also report that one party was known as the Party of
White Supremacy and the other party was known as "Nigger Lovers". Senator
Obama confirms this fact in his book: Dreams from my Father. He tells his
readers how white Chicago Democrats vowed to vote Republican before they
would vote for a "nigger" (Harold Washington) to be mayor of Chicago.
Many have confessed that the Senator's speech was compelling,
comprehensive and forthright and perhaps one of the greatest speeches
on race since the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream"
speech. Although his speech touched the hearts of all American
citizens, its fatal flaw was its failure to tell the truth, the whole
truth and nothing but the truth regarding who was really behind the
efforts to divide our country by race. This book is an in-depth
analysis of Obama¹s speech and contains information he chose not to
include.

The first thing you need to know about intuition is that you already have
it. The second thing you need to know is that in the process of discovering
your intuition you can uncover an endlessly deeper sense of who you are.
Insight into you and the world around you is an inevitable result of
intuitive access. This book will present a commonsense way to discover your
intuitive senses, and show you how you may dissolve judgment concerning
conventional views of the limits of human ability. Intuition is not magic.
It is just part of being human.

Chinese festivals draw the community together to celebrate the
well-loved traditions and to retell the familiar tales. Children
love to make lanterns and to decorate dragon boats. Suns being shot down
from the sky, a golden dragon springing up from a dry pond, and magpies
forming a bridge for the weaver and the cowherd are delightful legends that
continue to charm generation after generation. The bilingual texts in this
book serve both heritage and non-heritage Chinese language learners in the
western world. The intricate paper-cut illustrations invite readers to color
the pages as they reflect upon the stories. The traditional crafts will
enhance children¹s enjoyment of the festivals. Above all, the stories are
here for all to cherish.

This book is the celebration of a landscape -- the steppe of Central
Washington -- a country of bare hills and wide valleys, of basalt cliffs,
coulees and gorges, of sagebrush and bunchgrass, and cottonwood lining
rivers. Sun and wind brush the land in pastels, golds and rusts and grays,
browns and umbers, lavenders and mauves that shift with distance and
seasons. These are descriptions of a stark, spare land as it reveals itself
in dramatic landforms and vistas through the seasons of a year - in
stillness of late winter, blooming of spring, heat of summer and the
quieting of autumn. In these spaces, we are compelled to listen to the
voices of the landscape -- to wind and meadowlarks and coyotes, and the
rustle of cottonwood leaves by the river. As our gaze goes smoothly to
horizons, we are lifted into the silences of hills and sky.

I never thought I would die in London, England. On June 16th, 1980 I was
killed in an automobile accident there. There was no self and no earth. It
was like being in love on a beautiful day with the sun shining to the
millionth power. Reflecting on it, I cannot escape the irony that I spent
the subsequent eighteen months passionately wanting to return to where I had
gone. Twenty-eight years and three books later, I realize we do not have to
return. Part of it is still with me every moment before that moment. The
truth is that we don't die. This book is not an account of my experience,
but rather is the essence of the truth forever contained ultimately within
that experience and with The Immortal Now.

Workplace Rebel tells about my many extreme jobs -- dock lumper,
meat-cutter, furniture mover, and maximum security prison guard, to name a
few -- and how I gave both barrels everyday, despite stupid bosses and
unfair employment practices. Unfortunately, I often stood in my own way of
success because I was a combative, prideful drunk with a hair-trigger
temper, behaviors I'd developed to douse the pain of an abusive childhood.
But I never gave up hope. With the help of God, my dear family, and many
friends, I conquered my problems and remained a Workplace Rebel. This book
is dedicated to all you men and women who maintain the spirit of the Rebel,
and do what ya gotta do and are proud of it... All the way!
